Big hair can play a role in theme parties of the 1980s.
The 1980s were a time when Ronald Regan was president, greed was good and prevalent catchphrases included "totally awesome," and "Where's the Beef?" Big hair, mullets, leg warmers, and Michael Jackson also were popular during the decade. To relieve the 1980s, party themes can include music, clothes, and trends from the "me" decade.
Invitations
Design invitations with a 1980s flair. Use blank CD cases and print popular album covers from the 1980s on the front with party information on the inside. Another idea is to have invitations in the shape of a square. Print out a picture of a Rubik's cube on the front with details about the party on the inside. Instead of visuals, an invitation can include popular phrases from the decade such as "radical, "totally awesome," "gnarly," and "dude" in the wording.
Decorations
Decorations can include cardboard cutouts of pop culture from the 1980s. Cardboard cutouts can be found at places such as cardboard-standups.com and can include Darth Vader, ET, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Pac-Man. For good measure, guests can take their pictures with their favorite 1980s icon. If cardboard cutouts are not an option, decorate the walls with 1980s-themed posters, which can be found at places such as allposters.com. Neon was popular in the 1980s and brightly colored balloons, tablecloths, and napkins would add to the theme.
Costumes
For a blast from the past, have guests come in 1980s attire. Guests can raid their closets or hit used clothing stores for skinny ties, parachute pants, leg warmers, baggy sweatshirts, mini-skirts and jean jackets. Also, encourage guests to come as movie and television characters from the 1980s such as the Karate Kid, Indiana Jones, Freddy Krueger, or Magnum P.I. Or have guests come as their favorite hair band musician or popular recording artist from the 1980s such as Jon Bon Jovi, Madonna, Michael Jackson,or Pat Benatar. To encourage originality, award prizes for the best costumes.
Games/Activities
The 1980s lends itself to a host of activities and games. Have a 1980s movie marathon. Make it a comedy night by showing Airplane!, The Breakfast Club, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, or Ferris Bueller's Day Off. More serious offering may include Platoon, Scarface, Rain Man, or Fatal Attraction. The Rubik's cube was popular during the 1980s and guests can compete against each other to see who can complete a side of the six-sided figure or even all sides the fastest. Another contest may include a break dancing competition. Guests can show off their moves such as the Running Man to see who gets the highest score from a panel of judges. In addition, a game may include a music trivia. A few seconds from a 1980s song can be played and the first one to name the song correctly gets a prize. Prizes can also be awarded for guessing the artist correctly. Play a 1980s theme game. Scene It? and Trivial Pursuit both offer 1980s editions. Games can also have an arcade theme. Guests can play video games that were popular back in the 1980s, including Pac-Man, Super Mario Brothers, and Centipede.
Music
To bring guests back to the 1980s, compile a playlist of popular songs from the 1980s.
Include songs from Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, The Police, Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, Madonna, and Prince. Cyndi Lauper, Lionel Richie, and Culture Club also were popular during the decade. As a party favor, hand out burned copies of the CD with the 1980s songs on it to guests when they leave.
