Replacement End Caps For Old Baseboard Help!

we've moved into an apartment that has finned-tube baseboard heaters, and most of them are missing the end-cap pieces. aside from looking ugly, i am concerned our child could hurt himself on the sharp edges.
i cannot find the replacement parts anywhere. there are no other pieces elsewhere in the house, no indication of a brand name on the units themselves, and the only plumbing supply store in which i found some similar parts were not the right fit, very different.
please let me know what i can do to find these pieces.
thanks!

Hi Dutch,
Short of you posting a picture of the existing baseboard pieces, I would suggest going to Home Despot. I've gotten end caps for Slant Fin 30 BB there.
Another suggestion would be making some wooden pieces that can be easily fastened to protect the ends. Just put an oversized piece of 3/4 pine agains the end of the existing pieces and trace the profile of those pieces onto the pine.
If the pipe is longer than the cover sections, you may have to notch the wood to accomodate that protrusion.
Then just sand and paint, and a small 'L' bracket with wood screws and sheet metal screws can hold it onto the BB.
Good luck.
Howard

If this an Apt. I'd contact your landlord to get them to make repairs.. This can be a safety issue as you already pointed out.
Not all Home Depot will have this, all depends on market.

Hello,
I am doing the same thing. I replaced the old baseboards with SlantFin dummy covers sold at (ugh) Home Depot. They have the whole unit including the copper piping and they have the dummy replacement covers. The replcement covers come in a cardboard box with blue lettering.
The problem is removing and instaling the brackets that support the pipes and hold front face plate and swival piece. I called SlantFin tech support and I went on line looking for help. Tech support was a waste of time. I also found a post on this web site (didnt notice the 2004 post date though) asking the same exact questions I had. The answers I read were as helpful as the tech support.
Also, dont forget to buy the end caps, splice covers, inside corner covers and outside covers if needed. The dummy covers come in different sizes but Home Cheapo had 6 and 8 footers.
I found if you leave a space at the two ends of metal cover/ backing (the part that gets screwed / nailed to the wall) you can pull the pipes out and slip the metal brackets behind the pipes and then slip them into the upper and lower grooves of the metal backing. The tech support guy told me there is no magical way to do this. If you have any questions, feel free to write at

You could also bend the brackets to the side to slip behind the pipe and then bend back in place.
