Fabulous '50s Decorations

There are many ways to decorate for a 1950s theme party.

The '50s were a pivotal decade strongly associated with the birth of rock and roll, muscle cars and rebellious youth. The era conjures up such good-time memories people still have fabulous '50s theme parties more than 60 years later to celebrate the music and social trends of the time. Decorations add realistic ambiance to the parties.

Drive-In Decorations

Teenagers of the '50s spent their free time socializing at drive-in restaurants with carhops bringing food to their cars, often wearing boot-style roller skates. Park some cars from the '50s outside the party venue to set the mood and cover the walls in the party room with murals depicting teens hanging out in skinny jeans, white t-shirts and poodle skirts while eating burgers and sipping on milkshakes. Persuade a few guests to skate around the party in '50s style clothing. Display life-size cutouts of James Dean, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. Hang a banner outside painted like a drive-in sign with the host's name, such as "Mike's Burger Bin."

Sock Hop Theme

Rent a jukebox and stock it with 45 rpm records featuring the music of the decade. If no jukebox is available, use a cardboard replica and hide a CD player behind it to play '50s hits. Supply guests with bobby sox to wear while they dance. Hang album covers and records on the walls and from the ceiling. Cover the dance floor with black and white tiles associated with '50s d cor. Thumbtack posters of '50s music and movie idols to the walls. Simulate a romantic puppy love environment for slow dancing by hanging a mirror ball from the ceiling in the center of the room.

Soda Shop Premise

The television show "Happy Days" dramatized the soda shops of the '50s. Recreate a soda shop with cutouts of giant sodas, floats, ice cream cones and sundaes, burgers and French fries. Create a buzz about inflation by covering tables with menus of the period reflecting '50s prices. Post front pages of '50s newspapers on the walls depicting the decade's historical highlights. Cover one wall with a soda shop mural. Display a lifelike cutout of "The Fonz" wearing his trademark black leather jacket.

Other '50s Decorations

Since all '50s parties include music, decorate the walls with giant musical notes and hang inflatable musical instruments from the ceiling. Distribute hula hoops and encourage guests to show off their skills. Set up a photo booth with Elvis and Marilyn Monroe wigs for creative picture taking. Bundle candy bars and snacks from the '50s and hand them out as party favors.
