Make Bread Bowls

When serving soup, chowder or dip, using a bread bowl makes for a very nice and elegant presentation. It isn't difficult to make a bread bowl at home, especially if you purchase a round loaf of bread from a bakery. Follow these steps to make a bread bowl at home and impress your guests with a tasty creation from your kitchen.

Instructions

1. Purchase a round loaf of bread at your favorite bakery or make one at home. Sourdough, French and Italian breads all make great choices for bread bowls.

2. Use a serrated bread knife to slice a disc off the top of the round bread loaf. You want to make sure that you don't cut off too much of the loaf, or the bread bowl will be too small. How much you cut off the top of the loaf will depend on the size of the loaf, and what you're serving in the bread bowl.

3. Cut the top of the bread loaf from Step 2 up into finger-sized chunks to serve along with the filled bread bowl for dipping.

4. Remove the inside of the bread loaf. You can do this with your fingers or by cutting it out with a serrated bread knife. Try to leave a thickness of at least a half an inch of bread all the way around the sides and bottom of the bread bowl. This will give the bread bowl stability and keep it from falling apart when filled.

5. Fill the bread bowl with your favorite dip, chowder or soup and serve.
