Prepackaged bags of microwave popcorn give you very little control over the finished flavor. They may already include artificial butter or excessive amounts of salt. Some brands of microwave popcorn even contain diacetyl, a chemical that can lead to "popcorn lung" -- a condition that can lead to lung failure. Making popcorn on the stove is not an ideal alternative, because it requires constant attention to avoid burning the popcorn. Instead, make your own microwave popcorn at home. This allows you to control the flavor while avoiding artificial or harmful ingredients.
Instructions
1. Pour the popcorn kernels into your microwave-safe bowl, then add the oil and mix well to evenly coat the kernels.
2. Sprinkle the kernels as evenly as possible with the popcorn salt, then mix to ensure an even coating.
3. Put the lid on the microwave-safe bowl but leave it slightly offset. There should be a small gap on one side between the bowl and the side of the lid. This will allow steam to escape while keeping the popcorn kernels in the bowl.
4. Place the bowl in the microwave and set the microwave to operate on high for five minutes. Listen closely during this time and stop the microwave when the pops slow to several seconds apart. Remove the bowl from the microwave carefully, using a towel or oven mitt as the bowl will be very hot.
5. Sprinkle the popcorn with more salt or toss it with melted butter, if desired.
