Materials Used For Food Packaging

Food packaging provides a barrier between food and the external environment, reducing the risk of contamination. Some forms of packaging also prolong the shelf life of food, or allow it to be transported safely and efficiently. Often several different types of materials are used in the packaging of the same food. For example, a box of chocolates may have each chocolate wrapped in foil, resting on a plastic tray, inside a cardboard box, which is then wrapped in plastic.

Paper and Cardboard

Paper is one of the most widely used packaging materials, especially in the form of cardboard boxes and tubes. Cardboard containers are frequently used for eggs. Paper is also used to wrap smaller items, such as an individual tea bag. Paper bags are used for flour, sugar and salt. Cardboard is also to package large quantities of individually wrapped food for transportation.

Glass

Glass is widely used for bottles and jars. While glass bottles have become rare for certain types of food, such as milk, they are still the most frequently used type of container for wine as well as higher-quality oils and vinegars. Glass jars are the most common type of container for sauces, preserves, jams and honey, as well as foods preserved in liquid, such as olives or pickles.

Metal

Both aluminum and steel are commonly used for food packaging. Aluminum is found in drink cans as well as collapsible tubes for various pastes and foil wrappers for chocolates and candy. Steel is used for most varieties of tinned or canned food, such as beans or tuna. Screw-top lids for glass jars are also made out of metal.

Plastic

Plastic is used for rigid and semi-rigid containers as well as flexible films and wrappers. Plastic bottles are used for milk, water, soft drinks, juices, oils and sauces of various types. Plastic trays and containers are used for meat products, fruit and chocolates. Plastic cups or tubs are used for products such as butter, ice cream, yogurt, cheese and various desserts. Plastic bags are used to contain snacks or cooking ingredients, as well as large quantities of fruit or vegetables. Lids for cardboard tubes and caps for glass bottles can be made out of plastic. Plastic film is used to protect food, including food stored in containers made from other materials.
