Common Mexican Food Dishes

Mexican food is very popular in the United States

Mexican food is one of the most popular world cuisines eaten in America. The food is known for being spicy, but all dishes don't have to have that kick. As in other parts of the world, rice and beans are common side dishes with Mexican main courses.

Ceviche

Ceviche is often served as an appetizer. It is raw fish or shellfish, such as shrimp, marinated in lime juice. The acid in the juice cooks the fish a bit, but it is served mostly raw.

Chiles Rellenos

This main dish consists of a large chile, usually a poblano, stuffed with a filling and fried. The fillings can range from merely cheese to cheese and meat. The chile itself is mild, but the filling may be spiced up. The tomato sauce served on top of the chile relleno often is spicy.

Enchiladas

Enchiladas are a very versatile Mexican dish. They can be served with a variety of fillings, but are tortillas coated in a spicy tomato sauce, filled, folded and baked. The filling can be merely cheese or a combination of cheese, pork, beef, chicken or vegetables. The enchiladas are topped with a spicy sauce, often made with tomatoes and chilies, and cheese.

Tamales

Tamales are made with corn husks. A cornmeal paste is stuffed inside the corn husk and steamed. More commonly, something else is stuffed in the tamale with the cornmeal paste. The filling could be chicken, pork, turkey, cheese or anything else a person wants to try.

Quesadillas

Quesadillas are one of the most well-known Mexican dishes. A quesadilla is a large tortilla filled with cheese, vegetables and meat, folded and grilled. This is usually one of the least spicy Mexican dishes.
