Since the 1600s, Germany has been recognized for its production of white wines, according to "Wine Intro." The geography and climate of Germany plays an integral role in how the wines are made and taste.
Types
Germany is a leading producer of white wines. Reisling is one of the most famous German white wines made from Reisling grapes, known for its sweet, crisp flavor. Other popular white wines from Germany include Kerner and Silvaner. Red wines are also produced in Germany, such as Sekt, Dornfelder and Trollinger.
Geography
The majority of German wines are made in the southern regions of Germany near the Rhine river. The region of Rheinhessen is the largest wine-growing area of Germany. Here, vineyards are situated on riverbanks or on steep slopes; a style of wine-growing that is native and unique to Germany.
Statistics
According to Schlossadler International Wines, nearly 100,000 hectares, or 240,000 acres, of vineyards are found in Germany. Approximately 87 percent of this figure is dedicated for varieties of white grapes, with the remaining 13 percent is for red wine grapes.
