Clean A Maine Lobster

Maine lobster is easy to clean and cook at home.

Lobster is an expensive seafood whose market price varies depending on when it is caught during the year and where it is caught. Many people seek out Maine lobsters to buy and cook at home. If you have never cooked lobster at home, there are a few simple steps to follow to properly clean a Maine lobster prior to cooking.

Instructions

1. Place the lobster in the freezer at least 30 minutes. This a more humane way to kill the lobster than boiling it.

2. Separate the lobster tail from the body. Lay out a few sheets of newspaper on a table and put a pair of gloves. Remove the lobster from the freezer and place it on the newspaper. Grab the body firmly in one hand and the tail in the other hand. Remove the tail from the body by gently twisting and pulling on it.

3. Clean out the digestive tract. The anus of the lobster is located at the end of the lobster tail. Break off one lobster antenna and insert the wide end into the lobster's anus. Push the antenna into the digestive tract. This will force most of the digestive remnants out of the lobster. The rest should come out when you remove the antenna. Repeat this until the antenna comes out clean when you remove it.

4. Run the lobster tail under warm water. Dispose of the newspaper and the lobster waste.
