Wisconsin Wine Schools

Wisconsin Wine Schools

Wine appreciation ranges from knowing which bottle you like the best at the supermarket to crying if someone asks you to enter a supermarket on the quest for wine. Wine schools offer wine courses for every level of wine connoisseur, from those who just want to find the "perfect pairing" for their party to those who want to be able to teach and pass on the joy of wine appreciation themselves.

For Interest

For those who have a passing interest in wine, as in it would be a great idea for a party or for a work outing, you might want a one-day course. Perhaps you would be interested in the "traveling wine school" offered by the Wine Vineyard, which specializes in giving a wine tasting class for those who are curious but not willing to commit longer than a few hours to their enological education. Their shop is located in downtown Lake Mills, but their traveling wine school reaches those areas further abroad. They say they will visit anywhere from Madison to Milwaukee including, but not limited to; Sun Prairie, Middleton, Johnson Creek, Oconomoc, Waukesha and Brookfield.

For the Beginner

If you are serious about learning about wine, but have no background at all, then a four-week introductory course might be for you. The Wisconsin Wine School in Lake Mills offers a course that covers the basics of wine. It will add to your understanding of wine or help you determine if you want to take your study of wine to the next level.

If a four-week commitment seems too much and you live the Milwaukee area, then look into the Milwaukee chapter of Wine Brats. Wine Brats is an organization that looks to educate people on the joys of drinking wine and removing some of the mystery that surrounds it.

For the Advanced Wine Lover

You know your grapes, your regions, and the perfect pairings of which wine with what food. The Midwest Wine School in Milwaukee offers an advanced course that includes an examination. Although people who have attended the higher level courses at the Midwest Wine School have gone onto to become employed in the field, it is not a vocational school and does not market itself as such. They offer an advanced course that is an introduction to the rigorous training that goes into becoming a "Master of Wine." This is not a Master's degree in the traditional sense, although it does require the completion of a thesis.

Vocational Qualification

If you wish to work with wine professionally, then you should consider a vocational school. The Northeast Wisconsin Technical College is awaiting approval for a wine making course (to be determined by mid 2011). The proposed course takes two years to complete, broken into four semesters. Upon graduation the participants are awarded the Enology Associate Degree. It is offered at the Green Bay campus and requires a high school diploma for admission. Applications are being accepted.
