Cake Decorating Equipment

Cake decorating is an art form. The decorator needs a variety of tools to create the cake and decorate it. There are kits available to help you get started that are easy on the budget. But there are a few basic must have tools to decorate a cake beautifully.

Spatula or Knife

The spatula or knife frosts the cake. A smoothly frosted cake is the best foundation for a decorator.

Decorator Bag

The decorator bag is essential to cake decorating. The cake decorator applies pressure to the bag to pipe frosting out on to the cake.

Coupler

The coupler and collar hold a decorator tip. The coupler is placed in to the large end of the bag then the tip is dropped in, guided into the coupler and secured in place with the collar.

Decorator tips

Metal tips fill in and decorate a cake. There are hundreds of shaped openings to be used for outlines, garlands and decorative items.

Flower Nail

The flower nail is a small flat round or concave nail head that helps to hold and shape the bottom of a flower. The decorator pipes frosting on to the head and builds a 3-D flower on it.

Cake Columns and Tier Separators

A cake separator looks like a plate with ridges on it. The separators are placed on to a frosted cake to build tiers with columns in between the layers. The columns give stability to a tiered cake.
