Thicken Dips

Salsa is one of the most popular condiments in America.

A dip is a condiment for food, usually much thicker than a sauce or a spread. There are many different types of dips, from loose dips like pico de gallo, to smooth dips like hummus, to hot dips like cheese for fondue. But sometimes a dip can be too thin and watery and needs to be thickened. There are a few easy methods you can use to thicken dip. But don't forget that adding volume and thickness to a dip often means altering the flavor of a dip.

Instructions

1. Add fruits or vegetables to the dip, depending on whether the dip is sweet or savory. Some fruits and vegetables, such as chopped spinach, not only add thickness but help bind sticky or warm cheese dips together.

2. Decrease the amount of liquid in the recipe, or drain the ingredients as much as possible. Some liquid is good in most dips to help stir them and keep them smooth, but too much liquid can dilute the flavor and texture of a dip.

3. Put the dip in the food processor or pulse it with a stick blender. Incorporating the ingredients more into the dip not only makes it smoother, but in many cases forms an emulsion that binds to itself and makes it become thicker.
