Cook Hot Italian Sausage

Serve hot Italian sausage atop your favorite pizza.

Hot Italian sausage is made from a savory blend of pork and a variety of spices, such as oregano, fennel seeds, basil, salt and ground black pepper, The sausage typically gets its hot and spicy flavor from red pepper flakes and its rich red color from paprika. You can use cooked hot Italian sausage to top pizza, and in lasagna and spaghetti recipes. Italian sausage is a meal in itself when served with pasta or vegetable side dishes.

Instructions

1. Fill the bottom of a large saute pan with a 1/4-inch of water.

2. Place the hot Italian sausage links in the pan and bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Cover the pan and allow the sausages to cook for 10 minutes. Shake the pan gently a few times so the sausages cook evenly on all sides.

3. Remove the pan's lid and drain any remaining water into the sink. Add 1 tbsp. of olive oil into the pan and set it back onto the burner.

4. Fry the sausages over medium-high heat, turning them with tongs every two minutes; don't use a fork as it may puncture the sausage casing and drain the juices.

5. Cook the sausages until they are golden brown or until their internal temperatures read 165 degrees Fahrenheit on a food thermometer.
