Ways To Prepare Avocados

Avocado halves can be grilled for an easy appetizer.

Avocados are not only delicious to eat but also packed with healthy fats, vitamins and nutrients. The avocado's mono-saturated fats help to lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease and keep blood glucose in check. The green, protein-packed fruit also contains vitamin C, magnesium and more potassium than a banana. Avocados are not just for making guacamole. There are a number of ways to prepare them, and it is easy to add avocados to a variety of dishes.

Grilling

Brush halved and peeled avocados with olive oil, then grill for 4 to 5 minutes. The heat will make the insides soft, buttery and creamy. For extra flavor, add salsa to the grilled halves for a quick side dish or appetizer. Make sure your grill is well-oiled or the avocado may stick to it.

In Guacamole

Perhaps the most popular way to prepare avocados is to make guacamole. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 small jalapeno that is seeded and finely chopped with 1/3 cup finely chopped cilantro, 1 tsp. kosher salt, 2 tbsp. of lime juice and 1 clove of minced garlic. Right before serving, cut 2 ripe avocados in half. Set aside the pits, scoop out the flesh and dice. Add to mixing bowl, then mash with a potato masher until the guacamole is as smooth or chunky as you wish. If you need to store the guacamole for a while, add a pit or two to the bowl to prevent it from turning brown, then cover in plastic wrap. Guacamole can be used as a dip for tortilla chips as well as a topping for tacos, burritos, nachos, burgers, salads, sandwiches and more.

Substitute It

Fresh avocados can be substituted for butter or cream cheese on toast or a bagel. Simply smear some on as a healthy alternative. Avocados may also be used in the place of mayonnaise or cheese slices on sandwiches. Cut the avocado into slices and add to your favorite burger or sandwich.

Dice It

For a quick and easy snack, peel and dice avocados and place in a small bowl or dish. Drizzle with lime juice, sprinkle with salt and enjoy. Try adding diced avocados to your favorite salad. The avocado's creamy texture even allows you to skip the dressing altogether. To make a delicious Southwestern-style salad, mix diced avocados with diced tomatoes, chopped onions, corn and black beans with a dash of olive oil and lime juice.
