Can Jam Without A Canner

Make your own jams in the comfort of your own kitchen.

Peanut butter and jam is a standby snack of many people, both young and old. A problem with commercial jams and jellies is that they are generally jam-packed with preservatives that are not healthy. Canning jam at home can be intimidating and seems cumbersome because of the belief that you need a special canner. However, it is possible to make your own delicious jams without preservatives and without a canner.

Instructions

1. Pick or buy your fruit. Whether you pick it yourself or buy it from the grocery store, wash it thoroughly. Check the back of your fruit pectin box to see how much fruit you will need.

2. The hull is the green part at the top.

Remove the stems and leaves from the fruit. If you are canning strawberry jam, remove the hull.

3. Sanitize the jars and lids. A dishwasher will sanitize the jars, but if you don't have a dishwasher, you can wash them with hot soapy water and boil them. Leave them in the hot water until you are ready to use them. Boil the lids in a saucepan.

4. Crush the fruit with a potato masher, a food processor or a blender. Pour the fruit into a pot and set the heat to medium.

5. Measure the amount of sugar your fruit pectin requires and mix it with the pectin. You will need a portion of sugar now and a portion later. Read the back of the box carefully.

6. Turn up the heat on the stove to high and stir in the fruit pectin/sugar mixture. You can find pectin near the Jello at the grocery store. Wait for the mixture to come to a boil.

7. Pour in the rest of the sugar and allow the mixture to boil while stirring constantly for at least 1 minute.

8. Turn the heat down to low and begin ladling the jam into jars. Use a funnel to make sure the lip of the jar remains dry and clean. Fill them to within 1/8 inch of the top.

9. Place the lids on the jars and twist them as tightly as you can.

10. Bon appetit.

Turn the jars upside down and leave them to seal. Store your jars of jam in a safe, clean spot for later use.
