Finish Salad Bowls

Creating your own wooden bowl finish can save you money.

Making your own wooden salad bowls can be a great hobby, plus save you the extra money. Finishing eating utensils and tableware requires different ingredients, though the process remains the same. Regular wood finishes bought at the hardware store have hazardous ingredients that could eventually seep into your food. Natural products such as olive or mineral oils along with beeswax can create the same look without the hazard.

Instructions

1. Heat 1 cup of olive oil in a double boiler on the burner of your stove. Heat for approximately five minutes on low.

2. Grate 1 ounce of beeswax or cut into eight pieces and add to the warm olive oil. Mix until the beeswax is melted and blended with the oil.

3. Brush the mixture onto the clean salad bowl with even strokes. Two applications should suffice. Place the finished bowl on a dry, clean cheese cloth to dry. Lay the bowl rim down.

4. Dry the bowl overnight. Touch-up the rim if necessary.
