Ways To Dispose Of Milk On A Dairy Farm

Milk is a valuable asset to dairy farmers because of its ability to produce income. However, sometimes milk in infected or spoiled and must be disposed of. Disposing milk into natural water can negatively affect the environment, including fish, insects and vegetation. Fortunately, there are several ways to properly dispose of milk safely on a dairy farm. If you know do so, it can help prevent harm to the environment.

Bury the Milk

Dig a trench large enough to hold the milk. Cover the trench with dirt to eliminate the odor. Make sure the entrenched milk doesn't leak into any groundwater and that it's far enough away from houses or dairy sheds so its odor cannot be smelled.

Apply to Pasture

Dilute the milk with at least a 10-1 water-to-milk ratio so it won't cause pasture damage. Apply higher dilutions to prevent potential odor problems. Use a hose to apply the diluted milk to the grazed pasture. Spread the milk over as much land area as possible.

Designate an Area

Designate an area to dump milk that is away from any nearby water sources. Even though dumping milk in a designated area could cause pastoral damage and odor problems, the milk would be confined to a specific area. Make sure the designated area is at least 200 meters away from houses or dairy sheds. Use a hose to wash the milk from the foliage into the soil to minimize damage to the pasture.

Distribute to Animals

Feed whole milk to livestock. Make sure it doesn't contain any antibiotic residues that could harm the livestock. Avoid giving the livestock excessive milk that could rot and produce odor problems. Use a suitable facility to store the milk until it's given to livestock.
