Conduct An Experiment On Which Brand Of Bubble Gum Makes Bigger Bubbles

The gum used will need to be the same size in order for the test to be accurate.

Bubble gum companies have been comparing and boasting the size of their bubbles for years. In order for you, the consumer, to determine which bubble gum creates the largest bubble you will need to perform an experiment using scientific method. Scientific method is a procedural guideline for scientists to ensure the fairest and most accurate experiment. In the scientific community, methodology is essential in claiming any validity from an experiment, even if it pertains to the size of bubbles created by bubble gum.

Instructions

1. Remove the various pieces of bubble gum from their wrappers and place them on a food scale. In order for the experiment to work properly, all pieces of gum will need to be the same size. Trim the gum until all pieces are of the exact same weight according to your food scale.

2. Chew one piece of bubble gum until it is pliable enough to blow bubbles. It is important that you chew the exact same amount for each piece of gum that you test. If one piece is chewed more than another, the test results will be compromised. Do not chew all the pieces at once and then leave them out for the experiment. Each piece should be chewed immediately before testing.

3. Place the gum firmly around the edges of the hand pump. The seal will need to be tight in order for the gum to blow a bubble, so be sure to check for any leaks. Press down on the plunger and fill the gum with as much air as possible. Release a steady stream of air for each piece that is blown up. The gum should be pushed to the point of nearly popping. It may take several attempts to determine how much the bubble can withstand before bursting.

4. Measure the bubble at its peak using the caliper. This should give you an accurate measurement of the size of each bubble.

5. Record the results on your notebook after each experiment. It's important that you test each bubble gum brand several times. In order for your study to be taken legitimately, you'll need to be able to replicate the results. The larger the test sample, the more likely that your results are valid.

6. Synthesize your results by taking the average bubble size for each brand as well as the outlying bubbles that were much larger than the other samples. Based on your data, you should be able to determine which brand of bubble gum produces the largest bubbles.
