Types Of Cuban Food

Cuban food is a mixture of Latin, Amerindian and African cuisine that incorporates the use of meats, beans and various spices and vegetables. It is popular in the United States and has developed a rich and varied ensemble of foods. Desserts, main dishes and sides are all very important to Cuban culture, and recipes are passed down through the family year after year.


Black Beans and Rice


Black beans and rice is a staple side dish in Cuban cuisine and can be served with just about any meal. Beans are often seasoned with onions, garlic, pepper, salt and cumin.


Tostones


Tostones are flat, twice-fried pieces of plantains. They are salted and sometimes served with chorizo, a type of sausage, and white cheese.


Yucca








Yucca is a tube root that is served as a starch. It is peeled and fried along with garlic, salt and pepper.


Ropa Vieja


Ropa vieja is a popular Cuban dish that uses pulled or shredded beef that is set into a tomato broth, often filled with vegetables such as peas, and served with rice.


Flan


Flan is probably the most famous Cuban dessert. It is a baked custard dessert that is topped with a caramel coating.
