Grow Parsley Herbs

Grow parsley indoors or outdoors to enjoy the fresh herb.

Parsley is a culinary herb used to flavor and garnish dishes. The herb is available in many different varieties, but each requires the same growing conditions. Parsley grows well indoors and outdoors, which makes the plant versatile. When you plan to grow parsley, the seeds will germinate 28 days after planting. Challenges may arise when you grow the parsley plant, but if you care for it properly, then you will have a successful crop.

Instructions

1. Place the parsley seeds in hot water. Soak them overnight to hydrate them.

2. Plant the parsley in a soil-less medium. Fill a growing pot with this medium, and then water the medium to moisten it. Leave 2 inches of head space at the top of the growing pot.

3. Place the seeds 1/8 inch into the soil. Space them 1 inch apart and avoid packing the soil down so that the seeds can sprout.

4. Water the parsley to keep the soil moist when it feels dry. Place the growing pot in a warm area where they will receive direct sunlight.

5. Remove weak parsley seedlings when they sprout. Transplant the young seedlings to a new and larger pot with the same potting mixture and space them 10 to 12 inches apart. They will need to remain at this spacing distance when you transplant them.

6. Amend well-drained outdoor soil with organic matter if you plan to grow the parsley outdoors. Once the seedlings are 3 inches in height, transplant them outdoors after the threat of frost passes. If you want to keep the herbs indoors, then transplant them to a 10-inch growing pot enriches with organic matter. The parsley will need to receive at least six hours of direct sunlight during the day.

7. Apply mulch around the parsley. This will retain the moisture from water to keep the soil from drying out.

8. Water the seedlings to keep the soil moist. Do not over water the parsley seedlings because they are prone to root rot. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely between each watering. Water the parsley deeply after you plant them to ensure that the roots receive moisture.

9. Apply a fertilizer one or two times a year throughout the growing season for outdoor parsley herbs. A 5-10-5 works well for the herbs. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer to apply the correct dosage. Apply a liquid fertilizer to indoor parsley herbs, but use only half the recommended strength. Indoor plants will need fertilized every 4 to 6 weeks.

10. Harvest the parsley when the leaf stems have three segments. Cut the stalks off close to the ground, and store them in the refrigerator for two weeks.
