Getting Rid Of Red Wine Stains

Time Is of the Essence

One of the most important things that you can do to take care of red wine stains is to make sure that you take action immediately. Clean up as much of the red wine as you can to prevent further staining by blotting it with a paper towel or napkin. Always use a blotting action instead of trying to wipe it, as wiping will spread the wine around and can actually cause the stain to get bigger. The quicker you get the wine up, the less time it will have to soak into the material it was spilled on and the less likely it will be to permanently stain.

Mxing and Applying a Treatment Solution

As soon as possible after blotting up the spilled wine, make and apply a treatment solution to get rid of the stain. One of the best methods of making a treatment solution involves mixing 1 cup of water with 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide, then adding just a small amount of liquid soap (either a specialty soap or common dish soap). The solution should be well mixed and placed into a spray bottle (if available), then applied to the red wine stain. The treatment solution will remove the color from the wine stain, making it seem to disappear so that the wine can be cleaned up completely without leaving a red stain.

Final Cleanup

If the wine was spilled on clothing, get it into the washing machine as soon as possible. If it was spilled on carpet or upholstery, use a carpet cleaning solution, carpet shampoo machine or steam cleaner to clean up the area. Don't leave it for later, as hydrogen peroxide can have a bleaching effect if left on colored material for too long and the wine will still remain on the material until you clean. Even though you can't see it, you'll still be able to smell it, especially when it starts to sour.
