Substitute Canned Sweet Potatoes

Canned sweet potatotes can substitute for pumpkin in pie.

Keep cans of sweet potatoes on hand for fast substitutions of other ingredients in your recipes. Use the canned sweet potatoes when fresh are not available or to replace canned pumpkin. During 2010, canned pumpkin stocks in stores dwindled due to excessive rainfall where pumpkins were grown. During this time, canned sweet potatoes were still available, and they can be used to replace canned pumpkin puree in some recipes. Think beyond pie for using canned sweet potatoes, and see them as a valuable kitchen staple to have on hand as an emergency substitute.

Instructions

Replace Fresh Sweet Potatoes

1. Replace each 15 oz. can of sweet potatoes for 1 cup of fresh sweet potatoes. Use 1 cup canned sweet potatoes for each whole, fresh sweet potato.

2. Skip the steps for cooking and removing the skin from the fresh sweet potatoes in your recipe, as canned sweet potatoes are already cooked.

3. Taste the recipe before adding the sugar, especially if using canned sweet potatoes packed in heavy syrup. The syrup will make the canned sweet potatoes sweeter than fresh sweet potatoes.

Replace Canned Pumpkin Puree

4. Substitute an equal amount of mashed, canned sweet potatoes for canned pumpkin puree in recipes. For best results, substitute only in recipes needing 1 to 2 cups of pumpkin puree. Expect a slightly different, sweeter flavor if using sweet potatoes to replace pumpkin in recipes featuring the pumpkin flavor, such as pies.

5. Mash the canned sweet potatoes with a mixer or potato masher.

6. Add by 1 tbsp. amounts some of the liquid from the can or cream as you mash to create a smoother, creamier texture. The time the canned sweet potatoes were harvested and the variety will determine the amount of liquid you will need to add to the potatoes.

7. Taste the base mixture before adding the sugar to the recipe. Canned sweet potatoes, especially those in heavy syrup, will have a sweeter flavor than canned pumpkin, and you might need to reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe.
