List of Port Wines
Port is a fortified wine from Portugal. Brandy is added to partially ferment the grapes, forcing the fermentation to cease and resulting in a strong wine that is then matured for several years. It is appreciated for its depth of color and high grade natural sweetness. The six grapes most commonly used in the production of port are Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Amarela. Typically port yields a higher alcohol content than other wines. Vintners of the Douro Valley region of Portugal produce the wine, utilizing traditional methods, crushing all grapes for production by foot, rather than taking advantage of modern-day machines that increase output. Like all types of wine, port varies in flavor, body and texture dependent upon the grapes, holding unit and length of the fermenting process. The list here represents a solid range of offerings based on wood-aged, grape differentiations and extended length of hold time.
