Ketchup Stain Removal

Ketchup is one of America's favorite condiments: we drizzle it on hamburgers and hot dogs, and drown french fries and hash browns and eggs in the stuff. As much ketchup as we consume, we should know the proper way to remove those unsightly red, blotchy ketchup stains. This article tells you how.

Removing Excess Ketchup

With a paper towel or napkin, gently remove as much of the spilled ketchup as possible before attempting to clean. Assess whether your stain is on an article of clothing, something that could be removed and placed in a sink or tub or if it is a larger item such as a sofa or chair cushion. Don't smear the ketchup around and worsen the stain. Work from the outside in.

Stain Removal By Faucet

If the stain is on an article that can be run through a faucet, run cold water over the stain. This draws the ketchup out of the stain and into the water. If the stain remains, let the article soak in a tub of warm, soapy water for half an hour before rubbing the fabric, in a circular motion, with a soft cloth. If the stain still remains, use a stain stick (if the item is colored) or a mild bleach (only if it the item is white) and wash.

Stain Removal By Hand

If the stain is on a sofa or an article which can not be run through a faucet, take a damp cloth and, with a circular motion, rub a tiny bit of liquid detergent into the stain. If this does not remove the stain, then let sit for 30 minutes and repeat again. If this does not remove the stain, then use a mild bleach (only if the item is white) or a stain removal stick (if the item is colored) on the stain. Leave on for 15 minutes and then gently rub off with a damp cloth soaked in warm, soapy water. Let air dry.
