Cook With Curry

Curry powder is a blend of 10 to 20 different key spices. Popular in Indian cuisine, curry can add flavor to your cooking in many ways. Curry comes in a number of varieties and you can whip up your own at home using some of the common curry spices such as black pepper, chili powder, coriander, cloves, fenugreek, cumin, cinnamon, ginger and cardamom.

Instructions

1. Select or mix your curry powder depending on taste. When purchasing curry in the supermarket, you will most likely find the traditional, or mild variety as well as spicy, with more chili powder and sweet with more fenugreek, ginger and cinnamon.

2. Use neutral curry for cooking just about any type of meal, while spicy curry is generally used for meat and vegetable dishes. Sweet curry is most commonly reserved for sweet vegetable dishes, such as carrots or sweet potatoes, but is also used with fruits, particularly soups and puddings made from pears, apples and more.

3. Add just enough of your favorite cooking oil to curry powder to make a paste and brush onto meats or fish before grilling or baking. You can even mix curry powder in with bread crumbs and use to coat chicken or fish before cooking.

4. Mix a bit of curry powder into soups, stews or stir fries for a unique and delicious flavor. As a general rule, add curry early on in cooking as it takes a few minutes for the flavor to develop. Taste your cooking after 5 or 10 minutes and add more curry as necessary.

5. Combine curry with a bit of oil and vinegar and allow to stand for a few days. You can then use your curry dressing on salads, cooked or raw veggies, in stir fries or for cooking fish.
