Dijon Mustard Substitutes

Dijon mustard, named for the region in France where it was derived, is a unique mustard for its ingredient verjus, which is juice that comes from unripe grapes. In case you would prefer another taste over Dijon mustard's spicy kick, or in case you find yourself without any Dijon mustard in the house, you can use substitutes in place of it.

Honey Mustard

If you'd prefer a sweeter substitute to spicy Dijon mustard, honey mustard is a suitable substitute. Honey mustard is available in most grocery stores or you can prepare it at home.

Yellow Mustard

According to Gourmet Sleuth, yellow mustard can be a substitute for Dijon mustard. More tart than Dijon mustard, it is also smoother in texture and less spicy. Yellow mustard is available in grocery stores or online.

Homemade Dijon Mustard

If you happen to find yourself in need of Dijon mustard but don't have any at hand, you can put together some from common kitchen items. According to Budget Moms, you can combine onion, garlic, honey, dry mustard powder, vegetable oil, salt, Tabasco sauce and dry white wine to make your own Dijon mustard.
