Kefir grains look like cauliflower and are made up of bacteria and yeast. They have protein, lipids and sugars. Eating kefir grains can have many health benefits. It is said the grain was discovered in the Caucasus Mountain area where it originates from.

In order to make kefir you need a small batch of kefir grains. If properly taken care of, it will last forever. You can ship kefir grains fresh or dehydrated. Both methods don't take much time to prepare.

Instructions

Prepare Kefir Grains for Shipping

1. Place water-based kefir grains in a sugar solution of 2 tsp. of sugar, 1 cup of water and 3 tbsp. of kefir grains. You can substitute the sugar with 2 tsp. of molasses to reduce pressure build-up during the shipping process.

2. Place milk-based kefir grains in a sweet whey or fresh milk solution. Use 3/4 cup of boiled water that has been cooled, 1 to 2 tsp. of whey powder and 1 to 2 tbsp. of kefir grains. You can also substitute the water solution with 3/4 cup of fresh milk.

3. Use a small food grade plastic bottle that is 1/3 to 3/4 cup in size. Pour the solution in the bottle and squeeze so it reaches the top. Put the lid on and secure tightly. Make sure there are no air gaps in the bottle. It is recommended to use a shipping method that doesn't exceed seven to 10 days.

4. For dehydrated kefir grains, ship one part partially dehydrated kefir grains with two parts of dry milk powder in a sealed plastic bag. Kefir grains will last for two months in this state.

5. It is recommended you package the kefir grains as securely as possible. By using bubble wrap or placing them in a sturdy box, you can make sure the package won't end up damaged.
