Enjoy A Gluten Free Diet

There are many alternatives to gluten-rich foods.

Having a gluten intolerance should not prevent you from enjoying a varied and balanced diet. There are many alternatives available to rye, wheat and spelt, and you can still enjoy baking at home and eating out in restaurants. As well as eating alternatives to bread and pasta, you can fill your diet with a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. These are high in antioxidants and vitamins and can help boost your immune system, especially important for those with a diagnosis of celiac disease.

Instructions

1. Visit your local health food store for alternatives to wheat flour, such as flour made from rice and tapioca. You can use these for baking cakes and cookies as well as savory foods like bread and pasta, helping you enjoy gluten-free alternatives to your favorite foods.

2. Notify restaurants you are planning to visit. Most restaurants will have gluten-free options or will be happy to prepare them for you. This means you can still enjoy dining out with friends and family.

3. Eat at least five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables a day. As well as boosting your immune system, they can help digestive transit, problems with which are common to those intolerant to gluten. Eating protein, such as white meat, fish or eggs, will keep you fuller for longer, and help suppress cravings for carbohydrates.

4. Celebrate birthdays and special occasions by substituting your usual cake with a gluten-free alternative. Your local bakery should stock gluten-free products, but if not most bakers will happily prepare celebration cakes to your specifications.
