The History Of Feta Cheese

Feta cheese is a powerful and strong cheese that is used by many in salads and Greek-style dishes. Feta cheese has a long and interesting history filled with Greek influences.


The Start of Feta


Feta cheese has an incredibly long history that goes back for thousands of years. Feta is a Greek cheese that was mentioned in Homer's "Odyssey," which is believed to have been written around the eighth century BC.


The Name


Feta translates roughly to "slice" in Italian. It was named as such in the 17th century because it was sliced when packed into barrels.








The Myth


According to Experience Festival, the myth surrounding feta cheese names Cyclops Polyphemus as "the first cheese manufacturer." It is said that he carried sheep milk in an animal skin bag, only to find that it had become solid days later.


Original Feta


Originally, feta cheese was made with goat or sheep milk. The cheese is still put into brine and allowed to cure.


The Cheese Itself








Feta is white and crumbles very easily. In general, it is made with cow's milk. Each producer will have their own preference for the taste and flavor of their feta cheese.
