What Is Jarlsberg Cheese?


Jarlsberg is a variety of Swiss cheese with a mild, sweet, nutty flavor. It is made in Norway and exported all over the world. It is one of the most popular "baby Swiss" cheeses.


History


Norwegian cheesemakers learned to make Jarlsberg cheese from the Swiss in 1830. It was only made briefly before production stopped for unknown reasons.


Revival


Officials at the Agricultural University of Norway revived the old cheese recipe in 1956 and began exporting it around the world five years later.


Name








The cheese was named after Jarlsberg County where it was first made in the 1830s.


Appearances


Jarlsberg looks like a typical Swiss cheese. It is yellow with large holes.


Varieties


Jarlsberg is produced with or without a rind. It is available smoked or in special artisanal varieties that have been ripened longer for a stronger flavor.


Serving


Jarlsberg is a versatile cheese that can be served on a salad, in a sandwich or alone on a cheeseboard. It complements wine or beer.
