Stromboli is basically a stuffed pizza. Any pizza toppings you like can be stuffed into a stromboli and eaten like a hoagie. You can customize stromboli recipes to your liking by adding sauce, oil, cheeses and various meat and vegetable fillings.
Instructions
Stromboli With Sauce
1. Sprinkle a dry, grated cheese like Romano onto the bottom of the stromboli dough. The dry cheese helps absorb liquids created during the cooking process from sauce or vegetables, and helps prevent the stromboli from getting soggy.
2. Put shredded cheese such as mozzarella or cheddar on top of the dough. Keep the cheese in the center of the dough so it won't drip onto the edges.
3. Add your favorite meat and vegetable fillings to the stromboli. Common fillings include pepperoni, sausage, green pepper, spinach and ham.
4. Use a ladle and layer marinara sauce on top of the fillings. Sprinkle the sauce with Italian seasonings, such as oregano or basil, and seal the stromboli.
Stromboli Without Sauce
5. Spread a very thin layer of olive oil over the stromboli dough, avoiding the edges.
6. Add fresh garlic, minced onion or Italian seasoning mix to the olive oil. Distribute the ingredients evenly over the dough, avoiding the edges.
7. Layer your stromboli fillings on top of the olive oil mixture, alternating between meats and vegetables.
8. Sprinkle mozzarella, cheddar or any of your favorite cheeses over the fillings. Fold the stromboli and seal.
