Grab & Go Breakfast Ideas

A piece of fruit can be part of a grab-and-go diet.

When you're getting ready for work or school in the morning, you're often pressed for time. To make it to your destination on time, you may need to sacrifice a desirable morning routine, such as sitting down at the table to eat breakfast. But you don't have to give up breakfast entirely. As you head out the door, grab a meal for the road.

Ideas Requiring No Preparation

Pick a piece of fruit for breakfast. Avoid fruits that need laborious peeling, such as oranges, and fruits that are too juicy, such as watermelon. Instead, pair an apple, banana, strawberries or grapes with a cereal bar or yogurt for a breakfast that requires no other preparation.

Recipes Made With Fruit

Spread a tablespoon of peanut butter or jelly on a piece of bread, then fold the bread around a peeled banana for breakfast on the road. Cut an apple into slices, dab the slices with peanut butter and put them into a container. Mix blueberries or sliced strawberries with vanilla yogurt and top the mixture with granola for a parfait.

Smoothies

Make a healthy drink you can sip as you drive or walk. In a blender, mix a half cup of yogurt, a half cup of juice and one or two of your favorite fruits to create a smoothie. When making vegetable smoothies, blend vegetables like cucumber and carrots in a cup of orange juice. Toss a few ice cubes into the blender to maintain a smoothie consistency.

Cereal Recipes

Mix a whole-grain cereal with raisins, nuts, pretzels or dried fruit to create your own trail mix. You can even make your own cereal bars in advance. Bring a cup of brown sugar and a cup of corn syrup to a boil over medium heat. Boil for a few minutes and add a teaspoon of vanilla. Pour over 2 cups of your favorite cereal. Press down into a pan and allow to cool. Cut into bars.
