Store Potatoes & Onions At Home

Keep large quantities of potatoes and onions fresh at home.

If you stocked up on potatoes and onions at a farmers market, or if your home garden yielded a lot of the produce, store the vegetables properly to avoid spoilage. Potatoes and onions will last several months, so you'll always have some on hand for your favorite recipes. Storing potatoes and onions properly will ensure that they'll stay fresh and tasty throughout the winter or until you need them again.

Instructions

1. Sort through the potatoes and onions and dispose of any featuring rotten spots. Spread the onions out on a piece of newspaper in a cool, dry location and allow them to cure for two to three weeks, or until the roots dry out, before storing them.

2. Remove any sprouts from the potatoes using a sharp knife. Cure just-harvested potatoes in an area featuring temperatures of 45 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, such as a basement or cellar, for 10 to 14 days prior to storing them.

3. Place the onions and potatoes into separate, well-ventilated mesh bags.

4. Store the onions in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location, such as an attic, for five to eight months.

5. Store the potatoes in a very moist location featuring a temperature of 35 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, such as a basement, for four to nine months. Remove any sprouts as they appear.
