Cut Carrots For A Salad

Carrots add carotene and calcium to a salad.

Carrots are a tasty and healthy addition to any salad -- from the traditional garden variety to an all-carrot version. According to World's Healthiest Foods, the crunchy root vegetable is an excellent source of vitamin A, which helps maintain good vision, and carotene, an antioxidant that gives carrots their signature orange color. Typically, carrots are sliced very thinly for salad, which is difficult with a knife. A vegetable peeler or a hand grater with large holes work best.

Instructions

Potato Peeler

1. Thoroughly rinse your carrots, then use a vegetable scrubber to remove dirt and debris.

2. Chop off the stem and pointed tip and hold the carrot upright in one hand over a mixing bowl.

3. Peel down the length of the carrot with a potato peeler to create long, curly strips. Cut the strips into two or three pieces and add them to your salad.

Grater

4. Hold the grater upright on a cutting board.

5. Rub the carrot down the surface of the grater to make very thin slices.

6. Lift the grater to remove the grated carrots and add them to your salad.
