Healthy Homemade Trail Mix

Healthy homemade trail mixes are excellent sources of essential vitamins and minerals.

Healthy homemade trail mixes are excellent snacks that are as tasty as they are nutritious. You can make your own trail mixes out of nuts, seeds, dried fruits, cereals and other whole-grain foods. Homemade trail mixes can be taken to work, on hiking trips or eaten at home in the place of unhealthy snacks. These healthy snacks also make wonderful Christmas and birthday presents for health-conscious friends, co-workers and family members.

Kashi

You can make this tasty homemade trail mix out of Kashi whole grain cereal and other nutritious snacks in just a few minutes. You will need Kashi crunch cereal, peanuts, yogurt raisins, crasins (a cranberry raisin blend) and chocolate-covered nuts or soy nuts. You will also need miniature marshmallows and shelled sunflower seeds.

Mix all the ingredients into a bowl. Serve immediately or pour into an airtight container or plastic bag to store.

High Protein

This high-protein, whole-food homemade trail mix is a cinch to make and carry with you. You will need one cup each of pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and cashews. You will also need two cups each of raisins and raw almonds.

Toast the nuts in a 350 degree oven for eight to 10 minutes. Allow the nuts to cool slightly, then pour them into a bowl and add the raisins to the mixture. Mix thoroughly and enjoy.

Peanut Butter

This trail mix can be made using Peanut Butter Captain Crunch cereal or any other peanut butter-flavored cereal. While the flavored cereal is not usually considered a "healthy" food, this is a gateway trail mix recipe used to introduce kids to healthier eating habits. You will also need raisins, dried cranberries and salted peanuts.

Combine three cups of the cereal with the other ingredients. Serve immediately or store in a large Ziplock bag or airtight container.

Fruit

Dried fruit trail mix is perfect for those who want a sweet, healthy homemade trail mix that is free of nuts and fats. Combine several dried fruits such as banana chips, raisins, cranberries, dates, apricots and pineapple pieces together in a bowl and eat immediately or store in airtight container for up to one week.

Sesame

This trail mix recipe incorporates sesame sticks into the mix and makes a fairly large batch that is perfect for entertaining. You need pine nuts, soy nuts, dried dates, unsalted sesame sticks, Cajun sesame sticks, unsalted peanuts, chopped cashews, chopped almonds and pumpkin seeds. Mix all of the ingredients together into a large bowl and serve immediately.
