Most deli's carry fresh Swiss and cheddar cheeses -- both types of cheeses are popular types of cheese and are commonly available. Additionally, grocery stores or delis usually stock several types of Swiss and cheddar cheese. The main difference between Swiss cheese and cheddar cheese is the manner in which the cheese manufacture prepares the cheeses.


About Swiss Cheese


Cheese producers create Swiss cheese from various types of cheese from Switzerland. Some people might refer to this type of Swiss cheese as Emmental. Swiss cheese includes cow's milk that has a hint of nutty or sweet flavors. The cheese appears pale yellow and shinny. Additionally, Swiss cheeses develop holes or eyes during the aging process caused by the discharge of carbon dioxide.


Types of Swiss Cheese








Baby Swiss is a type of Swiss cheese. It has a smooth outside feel and appears pale yellow. In addition, baby Swiss has a mild, creamy, sweet and buttery taste. Another Swiss cheese is comte cheese. This cheese offers a sweet, fruity, buttery taste with a bit of tangy flavoring. Raclette is a form of Swiss cheese made from heated cow's milk over a blistering grill. This forms a crunchy surface with a spicy flavor while emitted a fruit-like fragrance.








Cheddar Cheese


Cheddar cheese dates back to an English village named Cheddar. Cheese makers create cheddar cheese from cow's milk. Manufactures usually had dyes to modify the color of the cheese. It is typically pale yellow, off-white or a bright pumpkin orange color. Additionally, cheese makers add fermented bacteria to cheddar cheese and this type of cheese cheddaring, a process to make the distinguishing taste of various cheddar cheeses.


Types of Cheddar Cheese


This type of cheese is available in a variety of flavors is most commonly found in grocery stores. Mild cheddar cheese takes about three months to ages and offers a mild taste. Flavored cheddar is fully matured cheese flavored with other ingredients such as wine, bacon or garlic. Additionally, a low-fat type of cheddar cheese is steppen. Also, cotto cheese is a form of cheddar cheese that offers a mild fresh taste and it derives from skim milk.
