Foods Popular In Monterey California

Garlic grows in abundance in Monterey

Monterey County is located on the central coast of California and its warm climate makes an ideal spot for growing fruit and vegetables. The locals take great pride in their produce -- and the county has been labeled the capital of the world both for artichokes and garlic. It's also the birthplace of the famous Monterey Jack cheese.

Cheese

Monterey Jack cheese is named after its city and county of origin. It was first produced by Spanish missionaries and got its name when a merchant named David Jacks started exporting it from the town of Monterey. This cow's-milk cheese is very popular in Mexican dishes, as it melds easily and has a mild flavor a little like English Cheddar, making it ideal for spicy dishes. Manufacturers often flavor it with herbs and it can be matured for stronger taste.

Artichokes

Monterey is surrounded by agricultural fields, and the year-round sunshine means that artichokes thrive. The area has been labeled the artichoke capital of the world, as they are available all year round -- although their color will differ slightly through the seasons. Winter artichokes have tightly packed leaves, while in the summer their shape flares out. Their popularity has resulted in local restaurants offering soups, bruschetta, dips and spreads containing artichoke.

Garlic

Monterey's annual garlic festival to commemorates its favorite herb, as well as another nickname as the garlic capital of the world. The county's Christopher Ranch is the largest shipper of garlic in the world, and the festival, founded in 1979, celebrates the region's yearly harvest. Monterey Jack cheese is often flavored with garlic.

Pork Chops

A popular dish known as Monterey pork chops consists of grilling and topping the meat with a relish made from tomato, lemon juice, sugar and sometimes even chili. Grated Monterey Jack cheese is typically added just before the chops finish grilling. The chops are often boneless and served on crusty bread.
