Holidays provide an opportunity for family and friends to come together and celebrate. Breakfasts are often overlooked in favor of large lunch or dinner feasts, but morning meals can also be festive affairs. While Valentine's Day is usually an intimate holiday, Mardi Gras and Chinese New Year's encourage lively celebrations that can go from early morning to late at night. Hearty breakfasts provide a nourishing start for active holidays.
Easter
Both Christians and Jews regard eggs as a symbol of new life. Eggs play a significant role in Easter and Passover celebrations. Children can decorate blown eggs and adults can make egg recipes for an Easter breakfast. Omelets and frittatas can also include seasonal vegetables like asparagus, fiddleheads, spinach or ramps.
Mardi Gras
Beignets and café au lait are an iconic New Orleans-style breakfast. Beignets are fried, square yeast doughnuts with a powdered sugar topping. The traditional café au lait of New Orleans consists of dark roast coffee, chicory and warm milk. Mardi Gras revelers may opt to start the day out with more substantial fare, like shrimp and grits, before the joining the parades or other festivities.
Valentine's Day
Sweethearts can prepare a romantic breakfast in bed for Valentine's Day. Easy-to-eat finger foods include muffins and fresh berries. Bake muffins in heart-shaped tins for a special touch.
St. Patrick's Day
Green is the iconic color for St. Patrick's Day. Many people drink green beer to celebrate. Children will get a kick out of a St. Patrick's Day breakfast of green eggs and ham, as it will likely remind them of a familiar children's book by Dr. Seuss. You can also color milk with a drop of green food coloring.
Chinese New Year
Dim sum is a classic Chinese breakfast in the United States and a festive way to begin the Chinese New Year. It consists of a seemingly endless array of small appetizers and finger foods. Dim sum is perfect for a large group of friends or family, as it allows each person to choose what he wants to eat. Many Chinese restaurants offer special foods for the New Year's celebration. The Chinese consider fish, chicken and oranges to be good luck foods.
