Glaze A Christmas Ham

A glazed ham is the center of a Christmas dinner for many.

The sweet and crunchy crust surrounding a savory ham is a Christmas treat. Glazing a ham is not difficult, but it requires care watching of the ham as it cooks to keep the glaze from burning. Sugars in the glaze caramelize. This deepens the flavor of the sugar and gives the ham a shiny finish with a slight crunch on the exterior. Ham glaze recipes are flexible; use your own recipe or make adaptations to another. Serve your next Christmas ham glazed instead of plain for a savory, sweet meal sure to become a family tradition.

Instructions

1. Cook the ham thoroughly to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Insert a knife between the skin and the fat of the ham to separate the skin.

3. Peel the skin off the ham with your hands.

4. Lightly score the ham in perpendicular, intersecting lines to create a diamond pattern on the thin fat layer covering the ham.

5. Insert the sharp end of a clove into the center of each of the scored diamond shapes on the ham.

6. Whisk together the brown mustard, crushed pineapples, brown sugar and ginger.

7. Apply the ingredients to the entire surface of the ham with a basting brush.

8. Return the ham to the oven and bake uncovered at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes or until the glaze turns brown.

9. Let the ham rest 30 minutes before serving.
