Grow Sprouting Beans

Grow bean sprouts at home.

Bean sprouts are a nutritious green that you can grow in your home with limited supplies. Sprouts are immature plants that give you a healthy dose of protein and vitamins when consumed on a regular basis. Growing the sprouts at home lowers your cost of adding this healthy food into your diet. Choose sprouting bean seeds instead of garden seeds that may contain pesticides and may not be safe for consumption.

Instructions

1. Prepare the growing jar by washing it with soap and hot water. Cut a square of cheesecloth to fit 1-inch below the jar rim.

2. Measure 1 to 4 tbsp. bean sprout seeds and pour them into the jar. Start with the smaller amount of seeds and gradually increase as you become familiar with the process.

3. Pour water into the jar to cover the seeds. Cover the jar opening with the cheesecloth and secure with a rubber band.

4. Place the jar in an area where can rest for 12 to 24 hours. Avoid shaking or disturbing the jar during this time.

5. Drain the seeds through the cheesecloth to remove liquid around the seeds. Set the jar in a dark place for four days as the seeds sprout.

6. Remove the jar from the growing area three times a day and rinse the bean seeds or sprouts with cold water. Shake the jar upside-down to remove most of the water and return to the dark place.

7. Rinse the seeds after four days in a dark area and move the jar to a sunny location to let the sprouts turn green. Grow the bean seeds until they are approximately 1 to 2 inches long.

8. Open the growing jar, dump the sprouts into a colander and rinse with cold water. Drain the sprouts and place them in a vented container in a refrigerator for up to seven days.
