Hawaii Bar Drinks

Pineapple juice, coconut cream and rum are common ingredients in Hawaiian drinks.

When envisioning the perfect Hawaiian vacation, lying on the beach, gazing upon the sunset and sipping a cold tropical drink may come to mind. Hawaii is the inspiration for many cocktails, from the brightly-colored Blue Hawaii to the Lava Flow which uses two of Hawaii's most famous flavors--pineapple and coconut. Whether ordering from the bar or making your own, at home or in Hawaii, these Hawaiian drinks will remind you of the islands.

Blue Hawaii

Created by Hawaiian bartender Harry Yee in 1957, the Blue Hawaii has become a signature drink of Hawaii and a go-to tropical drink for vacationers. The bright blue cocktail is a zesty blend of blue curacao, vodka and rum. To make a Blue Hawaii, mix 3/4 oz. rum, 3/4 oz. vodka and 1/2 oz. blue Curacao with 3 oz. pineapple juice and 1 oz. sweet and sour. Serve with plenty of ice and pineapple garnish.

Mai Tai

One of the most popular "Hawaiian" drinks, the Mai Tai, was not even created in Hawaii. It has been said that California chef Don Beach created the cocktail in the 1930's or 1940's. To enjoy your own Mai Tai, combine 1/2 oz. orange Curacao, 2 oz. orange juice, 1/2 oz. lime juice, a dash of simple syrup and a dash of orgeat. Add 1 oz. of light rum followed by 1 oz. of dark rum and serve with ice.

Lava Flow

The Lava Flow is made with pineapple and coconut. Pair this with the fact that the cocktail gets its name from lava flowing down one of Hawaii's several volcanoes, and you've got the ultimate Hawaiian drink. Blend 2 oz. strawberries, 1 oz. light rum and 1 oz. Malibu rum in a blender until the mixture has a smooth consistency. Pour into a large glass. Rinse the blender, then add one banana, 2 oz. coconut cream, and 2 oz. pineapple juice and blend until smooth. Pour mixture into the glass slowly. The strawberry and rum mixture should rise up the sides of the glass, resembling flowing lava.

Mimosa Hawaiian

This cocktail will remind you of a traditional Mimosa with a Hawaiian twist. The addition of sweet pineapple juice and apricot nectar creates the Mimosa's tropical taste. To make Mimosa Hawaiian, mix 12 oz. apricot nectar, 12 oz. pineapple juice, one can of frozen orange juice and 3/4 cup of water together until the orange juice has thawed. Stir in one bottle of dry white champagne and serve in champagne flutes.

Chi Chi

Chi Chi, made with vodka, pineapple juice and coconut cream, is a tasty and traditional Hawaiian drink. Blend together 2 oz. vodka, 5 oz. pineapple juice, 1 oz. coconut cream, 1 cup of ice and 1/2 tsp. superfine sugar. Pour into a tall glass and garnish with pineapple for an extra tropical accent.
