Red Wine Nutritional Information

Red Wine Nutritional Information

Red wine consists of 100 calories per 4 oz. serving, including minimal nutritional measures (less than 4 percent) of sodium, protein, riboflavin, calcium and iron. The skin of red wine grapes is saturated with antioxidants and flavonoids, which aid in disease prevention.

Benefits

In 1992 Harvard researchers included moderate alcohol consumption as one of eight proven ways to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

Expert Insight

The University of California tested wines to determine which grape varieties have the highest concentrations of healthful flavonoids. Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Syrah scored highest.

Features

In animal studies, a nutritional chemical in red wine called "resveratrol" has both heart-protective and cancer-protective effects.

Considerations

Men benefit nutritionally from one to two glasses of wine per day and women from one glass per day.

Fun Fact

The "French Paradox" refers to the comparatively lower incidence of heart disease in France despite high levels of saturated fat in their diet. Epidemiologists suspect that this difference is due to their comparatively higher consumption of wine.
