Turn Apples Into Cider

Make homemade apple cider.

Apple cider is a perfect drink to heat during those cold winter months. Each sip is sweet, warm and comforting, so it is easy to understand the appeal of this classic beverage. Many people normally buy their apple cider from the grocery store. However, these ready-made ciders may contain preservatives and won't be as fresh as homemade cider. Making your own apple cider is simple and can be a fun project for your family and friends.

Instructions

1. Wash and remove the cores from the apples. Slice into wedges. Discard any rotten parts.

2. Cut the orange into slices.

3. Add apples and oranges to a large stockpot.

4. Add 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 3 cinnamon sticks, 1 whole nutmeg and 1 tbsp. of whole cloves to the stockpot. Add enough water to cover everything in the pot.

5. Bring the water to a boil for an hour. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 2 hours.

6. Use a potato masher to mash the pot's contents. Continue to simmer until the cider is dark, sweet and spicy.

7. Cool the cider to room temperature. Strain the cider using a cheesecloth.

8. Store the cider in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Reheat when ready to serve.
