Throughout the year, many of us can get a sniffle here and there. But if they stick around, we have to determine whether it's a cold or just an allergy. Statistics show that one in five people deal with allergies each year, yet some people don't realize it's actually allergies that they're dealing with. There are some ways to figure out what's causing your latest bout of sneezing and sniffling to determine which treatment will work for you.

1. Examine your family history, and find out if your family members have allergies. Many times, a predisposition to allergies can run in a person's family. So, if you think you might have an allergy or two, do a little digging to find out if it's just a common cold or really something that should be treated with medicine.
2. Watch what you put in your mouth. It could be a cause of your allergy symptoms. If you have certain symptoms that seem to appear when you eat certain foods, you may be experiencing a food allergy. These can pop up in adulthood or reoccur from childhood. But they aren't as easy to spot. Therefore, keeping a close eye on your diet can help you determine what's causing your recent symptoms.
3. Look at your surroundings and figure out what common allergens are among them. Cat and dog dander can cause sneezing, watery and itchy eyes, as well as many other allergy symptoms. Too many dust particles can cause the very same symptoms and give your allergies cause to flare up.
4. Keep track of the recent pollen count outdoors. Most news programs and newspapers keep track of the pollen count during the summer months, so read up. If you have allergy symptoms that flare up on the same days as a high pollen count, there could be a correlation.
5. Talk to your doctor about what think you is going on with your immune system. Sometimes, trying to determine what's wrong with your body on your own terms may not be the best idea. Doctors are trained to find out what health problems you are experiencing and bring the best relief to your sinuses and watery eyes.
