What Is Ethiopian Food

Ethiopian food is characterized by communal eating and spicy stews.


Ethiopian meals are characterized by sharing food from common plates with one another and eating with your hands. Ethiopian food is very distinctive and spicy, characterized by a large flatbread that is eaten in tandem with spicy stews, sauces and accompanied with beer or wine.


Bread


Injera is a flat airy bread made from fermented grains of teff.


Injera is Ethiopian's staple bread, a flat bread made from the fine grains of teff, unique to Ethiopia. According to Menus and Recipes from Africa online, Injera is like a large sourdough pancake-like bread. Injera is enjoyed by tearing it into pieces and rolling stews inside.


Stews


Chilli powder and other spices are used to create wot, a spicy stew.


Wot is a spicy stew made from beef, lamb, chicken, goat or lentils. The foundation of any good wot is berbere, which is a spicy seasoning composed of chilli peppers, garlic and other spices. Alitcha is a milder stew that is made from meat or beans with garlic, ginger and other spices.


Beverages


Coffee is a drink enjoyed with much importance in Ethiopian dining.








Tej is a type of honey wine that is enjoyed with Ethiopian food. Tella is a type of beer enjoyed by Ethiopians. According to Ethiopian Recipes.net, coffee is known as bunna and is served with much ceremony and tradition.
