Use Wood Grilling Planks

Grilling food on wooden planks is a custom that was started by the native people of the Pacific Northwest. Foods such as meat, fish, vegetables or any other food that can be cooked on a grill can be cooked on a wooden plank. As it is grilling, the food absorbs the moisture, natural oils and flavor from the wood. Follow these steps to grill your next meal on wooden planks.

Instructions

1. Buy wood grilling planks. You can find them at most stores that sell cooking supplies or at the Plank Cooking site. Cedar, alder and maple wood are the most popular choices. The planks are also available in different sizes to match the size of the food you will be cooking.

2. Soak the grilling planks in water. Cedar is a soft wood that should be soaked for 2 to 4 hours. Maple, alder and other hardwoods should be soaked for 6 to 24 hours. Instead of water, the planks can also be soaked in wine, fruit juices or beer to add a different flavor to food.

3. Heat up your grill.

4. Place the planks on the grill with the smooth cooking surface face down.

5. After 5 to 10 minutes, turn the plank over. The rough surface of the plank should be facing the grill.

6. Brush oil on the surface to keep food from sticking to it.

7. Place your food on the wooden plank and cook it until it has reached the correct internal temperature.
