Make Sweet Corn Bread From Scratch

Sweet cornbread is the perfect complement to a bowl of chili.

Native Americans learned dry corn and grind it into cornmeal. Since its introduction to Europe in the 17th century, cornmeal has replaced other grains in breads and puddings. The most basic cornbread recipe includes cornmeal, eggs, flour and milk, but you can add ingredients and make it as plain or as sweet as you like.

Instructions

1. Mix the first six ingredients -- the dry ingredients -- in a bowl.

2. Mix the eggs, buttermilk and shredded pepper jack cheese in a separate bowl.

3. Add the wet ingredients to the center of the dry ingredients, and mix lightly together with a wooden spoon.

4. Continue to lightly beat everything together ingredients, adding corn, butter and rosemary.

5. Pour mixture into a greased pan. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes in a 375 to 400 degree oven until you can stick a toothpick in the center of the corn bread and the toothpick comes out clean.
