A Menu For A 50s Party

Cheeseburgers and fries were standard drive-in movie food in the 50s.

Rock and roll and drive-in movies were the order of the day in the 1950s, so throwing a party that features these themes will remind your loved ones of this upbeat era. There are also certain foods associated with the '50s that will add to the authentic feel of your celebration, and most of the fare is really easy to prepare.

Cheeseburgers

Burgers were the main dish of choice in '50s diners, and were served to teens and young adults as they enjoyed their favorite films at the drive-in movies during the decade. Create a cheeseburger bar at your '50s party by offering your guests several types of burgers, including traditional beef, turkey, salmon and even veggie burgers. Offer several types of cheeses. Provide fixings for each burger, like a cabbage slaw for the salmon burger, or chipotle barbecue sauce to accent the turkey burgers. Serve the sandwiches on pink or black plates to further emphasize the diner theme.

Fries

Cheeseburgers wouldn't be complete without fries, so these potato variations should definitely make an appearance at your 1950s-themed event. Serve the standard shoestring fries to go with the cheeseburgers, along with steak-cut fries and sweet potato fries to give guests more flavorful options. Include several seasoning choices for party-goers to add to their fries as well, like dried herbs and Parmesan cheese for the steak fries or cinnamon and nutmeg for the sweet potato fries.

Milkshakes, Floats, and Sundaes

Remind your guests of their childhood by serving root bear floats, as well as milkshakes and malts in a number of flavors. While standards variations like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry were common in the '50s, you can make your party menu even more impressive by making malts in banana, cherry and caramel flavors. A 1950s-style ice cream sundae bar will also help to make the party a hit. Mounds of vanilla ice cream, shredded coconut, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, bananas, chopped nuts and cherries are the perfect ingredients for the make-your-own-dessert portion of the celebration.

50s Sit-Down Dinner Fare

For a party that features the sit-down, TV dinner-style meals from the '50s, give your dinner guests the main course of meatloaf, along with mashed potatoes and a vegetable like peas or carrots. A variation on these dishes will make the meal more enjoyable, such as adding a spicy gravy to the meatloaf, or candying the carrots with honey and vanilla extra before serving them. Death by Chocolate cake makes a delicious and decadent dessert, accompanied by a frothy glass of milk or a cup of coffee for each guest.
