Pu-erh teas are famed for their medicinal properties and renowned in many provinces for their rich deep flavors and numerous distinct varieties. There are so many different blends, ages and regions that produce puerh tea, it isn't an easy task for a consumer to choose between them.
Instructions
1. Budget for your tea like a bottle of wine; pu-erh tea can cost anywhere from 5 dollars for a bag of teabags to thousands for an antique or imperial blend. If you are new to this tea, try an inexpensive young blend such as a green loose leaf or a common shou variety.
2. Find the most convenient form of tea packaging. If you have a tea filtration machine, choose a brick, tea cake or loose-leaf variety as you can easily brew any of these. If you only have hot water, either buy a small tea strainer or stick to tea bags, which will severely limit your choices but are quick and easy to use.
3. Read the description of the properties that each individual blend offers. With so many different varieties of pu-erh, you can find blends designed specifically for weight loss, detoxifying or a number of other medical conditions. Find the properties best suited for your own system.
4. Try several different types before you buy. Some stores will let you sample their teas, especially if you are making an expensive purchase. If you buying from the Internet, get familiar with the characteristics of green, black and white teas from other varieties so at least you will know what you prefer.
5. Inspect the tea for signs of mold or insect infestation. White or yellow spots and large cracks are good indicators of bad tea and you should avoid tea with any signs of contamination. If you have ordered from the Internet, return the tea immediately for a full refund.
