Potted Tomato Plants

Consider growing your tomatoes in a pot.

Tomatoes are a popular fruit because they are relatively easy to grow and can be eaten in so many different ways. Growing your own tomatoes does not require a large garden space. Several tomato varieties can handle being grown in pots, whether you place the pots on your patio or hang them on your balcony. Just remember that potted tomatoes will need more watering than ones grown in the ground because they won't have as deep roots.

Patio

As the name of this tomato variety implies, it is a hybrid that was specifically designed to be grown on patios and in pots. Patio tomatoes have also been bred to be disease resistant and produce bushy plants that grow up to 2 feet high. The shorter size of this plant, in relation to other varieties, means that you won't have to stake the plants to keep them upright. Patio tomatoes produce medium-sized, sweet tomatoes.

Husky

Husky tomato varieties also perform well in containers. There are three different types of husky hybrids: husky red, husky gold and husky pink. The tomatoes are all fairly similar, but the colors of the fruits correspond to their names. Husky tomatoes produce fruits for a long time during the growing season, so it is an option if you only have space for one plant. These bushy, 2-feet-tall plants produce large fruits.

Roma

Roma tomatoes are perfect in sauces and soups. These tomatoes are small to medium and are shaped like ovals. They grow upright and in a bushy habit and might require staking or growing in a cage. Roma tomatoes ripen at roughly the same time, and the plants will not continuously produce after the tomatoes are harvested, as some other varieties will.

Tiny Tim

If you like eating small, bite-sized tomatoes and need a variety that can handle being grown in a container, consider growing the tiny Tim tomato. These plants produce bright red tomatoes that are about a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch in diameter. The plants grow between 1 and 2 feet tall and can be quite bushy. Tiny Tim tomato plants produce their fruits all at once and will not continue to produce throughout the growing season.
